What is the best antivirus?

Norton? Malwarebytes Anti-Malware? Or? Paid version? Or not necessary?

Norton is crap. It will randomly completely block internet which requires using the removal tool to uninstall and then reinstalling it again to fix. Also very bloated. Actually pretty much any issue with it (which happens extremely frequently compared to other AVs) requires using a dedicated uninstall software and then reinstalling.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is not an antivirus, it is an anti-malware. That being said, it is one of the best security softwares in existence. Worth the money if you can afford it.

As for antivirus, I normally just use Microsoft Security Essentials...mostly because it just doesn't have fluff. It does what it does without popups unless there is a problem, otherwise it is totally invisible. The detection is not as great as some other options (many others actually), but it isn't as big of a deal as most malicious software are not viruses, but adware/spyware/trojans which malwarebytes detects.

Malwarebytes is an exeptional product. I downloaded the free trial for my sister because she couldn't use her computer anymore. One of the things it was doing was shutting off. Malwarebytes fixed her computer and it's running perfectly since. She had 1800+virus/malware etc. NO LIE !!! After the free trial (2weeks) don't uninstall it, you can update and scan when you want. The difference with the paid version is that when you pay, it runs 24/7 and when you update and scan yourself (click update/ scan) its free. And yes, you can scan a particular site. After the 2 weeks free trial, your computer will run so well that if you get a problem you will be able to get rid of it immediately with malwarebytes. When it finds viruses or malware it "quarantines" them and you can see what 'they' are and you can "remove them from your computer completely" by clicking. Keep the anivirus product you have now though, because after the 2 week trial is over, if you do the scanning yourself, you will still need to have an antivirus running all the time

Can run a free setup. I've been running it for years and it has been great. Download Microsoft Security Essentials (free) at Windows.com. For those tricky mal-ware, you would want Malwarebytes, and have a cleaner when your browser freezes. Some mal-ware prevents you from going online, so having a mal-ware removal tool is ideal because some anti-virus won't run unless it is updated and you can't go online to update it renders it useless. For the FBI style viruses, it prevents you from closing your browser, even if you cold boot it. When you start it right up the browser will pop right back up and you can click the X button a million times and it would not go away. Since most softwares can't detect it me a virus or mal-ware. the program like Ccleaner or Slim Cleaner will force the browser to close and clean all history so you can track hit down using your antivirus and mal-ware.
I also run a program call HitmanPRO, it scans my computer for anything foreign when it starts up. Remember that these are all free products so you're not going to get it's full benefits but MSSE is basically like your Norton and McAfee without the annoying reminders and pop-ups that can be a burden just like a mal-ware.
Hope it helps, been running it for years and never had a problem. Oh and you always want to read things before installing it, because some programs now come with a taskbar such as Coudit that can be very tricky to get rid of because it doesn't register as a virus or mal-ware.
