Safe your Computer From Virus
1. Install Linux instead of Windows.
Or better yet, OpenVMS. There are still security issues, just not viruses.
Or run Windows in a virtual machine like Virtualbox. Then if the VM gets a virus, you don't care, you just revert to a saved clean snapshot which takes about 30 seconds.

2. Install Operating System Security Updates
Install Application Security Updates
Install a quality Anti-Virus Application
Keep your Anti-Virus App. updated with the latest virus signatures / definitions
Install a good Anti-Spyware / Adware / Malware application
3. Brian is right- the ONLY way to be 100% safe from Viruses is to never connect to the internet ever. Really the old way to prevent that.
But if you don't want to disconnect from the internet then here is my advice to you:
Get some Anti-virus. Doesn't matter if it's Avast, Norton, Webroot, Etc. just get it so it lowers your chances of being infected. And really- just be smart on what you download and what sites you visit- never click on any pop ups or ads because sometimes they have viruses inside them.
4. If you use the internet for anything your going to get a virus at some point. but don't open mail from anyone you don't know and don't open any mail that has attachments from anyone you don't know. don't open mail from anyone you know if the content of the message is something the person wouldn't be sending you. Avast is a good free antivirus program also SpyBot.
