My Laptop Overheats
I want to leave my Alienware 18 laptop on all night every other night and I was wondering what would the effects or what exactly would happen if my laptop were to overheat while I am asleep?
As the other answers say, as long as it has good airflow around it, the machine itself should be OK.
Standing the back of the machine on something to lift it a bit and give better airflow underneath may help with keeping it cool.
However, leaving it on all night presumably means it will be on external power.
The worst possible state for a laptop battery is to be held at full charge in a running (= hot) computer.
The battery can be completely wrecked within a few weeks like that.
Take the battery out if the machine will be running on external power for long periods and put it somewhere cool - it will last far, far longer.
First of all, all laptops will overheat. Make sure that once a week you take a can of Compressed Air and Just blow thru the Vents. Spray the vents horizontally. You should also do this for all of your ports as well as you keyboard.
They sell Cooling Fans at most Office Max etc. Just find one that fits your laptop. Measure left side, Measure right side. You do not need to buy an expensive one, they all do the same thing.
If it overheats it will have an automatic shutdown. As other say make sure it has good airflow, but be aware, leaving it on overnight will shorten the battery life, attract more dust to the innards - the fan and heatsinks etc and use more power.
do beware that leaving a computer weather it's a laptop or desktop. on for weeks can mess up your power supply it happens a lot to people who leave there computer on for month or 2 then just shut it off and it won't restart your power supply will need periodic breaks trust me.
